Bulgaria and northeastern Greece are experiencing moderate lightning activity (afternoon of the 2nd of March). The same is valid for the west coasts of Turkey. This activity is expected to gradually diminish as it moves towards the east.

Mediterranean flashes (29/02/2016)

Flashes are recorded (morning of February, 29) over numerous areas of the Mediterranean coasts. The electrical phenomena are associated to a low pressure centre, located in the area. The Adriatic coasts of northern Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina are affected in the central Mediterranean. The maritime area west of Sardine and the Algerian coasts are experiencing a lot of flashes too.

Widespread lightning is covering significant parts of western Mediterranean during the morning hours of the 28th of February. The maritime area that extends from the Sardine to the Balearic Islands is experiencing significant lightning activity caused be a low pressure system situated in the area. As the system moves towards east, lightning is expected over Italy during the day.

The activity is produced by a low pressure system situated in the Adriatic that moves eastward. It is expected to continue throughout the day and gradually affect the whole Balkan region.

Fiji: At least 20 reported dead in wake of powerful storm (23/02/2016)

At least 20 people are now reported dead after a powerful storm tore through the Pacific island nation of Fiji. A massive clean-up operation has started after tropical cyclone Winston flattened remote villages and cut off communications. It packed winds of up to 325 kilometres per hour when it hit on Saturday. Aid agencies warned of a widespread health crisis, particularly in low-lying areas of the country where thousands of the country’s 900,000 people live in tin shacks, after crops were wiped out and fresh water supplies blocked.

Lightning bolt kills family of 5 in Siavonga, Zambia (23/02/2016)

Lightning has killed a family of five people in Siavonga District of Southern province. Siavonga District Commissioner (DC) Lovemore Kanyama confirmed the development to ZANIS saying the family who include father, mother, and three children were struck by lightning on Sunday night. The incident happened during a downpour in Munyama area.

Thunderstorm claims 3 more lives in South Africa (21/02/2016)

The KZN South Coast has been left reeling after severe thunderstorms claimed the lives of 3 more people, this time in the uMzimkhulu Municipality of South Africa. The provincial government says 80 households were affected by the lightning strikes on Friday night. The latest tragedy comes a day after 4 people, including a child, were killed by lightning in the KwaMachi area near Harding on Thursday night.

Lightning knocks out Internet on Cayman’s Island (18/02/2016)

A lightning strike along one of the submarine cables that connects Cayman’s Internet to the rest of the world knocked out Internet service for many on Grand Cayman Tuesday evening. The lightning hit a landing station at the U.S. end of the Maya-1 cable system between Cancun, Mexico and Hollywood, Florida, on Tuesday afternoon, affecting Internet access and some phone service in Cayman, according to local telecom companies and regulators.

3 killed, 40 hurt in KZN lightning strike tragedy in South Africa (14/02/2016)

Three people from KwaMachi near Harding have died after lightning struck a tree they were standing close to. 40 others were injured during the incident last night (13th of February).
